Andy Snow always smiling

50 years and still counting

“The more I practice, the luckier I get..”

In 1971, Andy Snow begins to immerse himself into the art and science of photography while completing his philosophy degree at Princeton University. Under the guidance of documentary photographer, Sol Libsohn, and photography-as-art historian, Peter Bunnell, Snow begins his creative practice of illuminating narrative using photographic media. In 1972, with his trusty 28mm Nikkor tilt/shift lens, he is employed as the staff photographer for an architect firm in New Brunswick, New Jersey and goes on to work as chief photographer with a start-up group creating videos with battery operated new tech tape recorders. 1983 is the year he goes all in with his own practice of photography and video; by 1987 he is traveling and making photos and videos on assignment for corporations, publications, and photo agencies around the world.

In 1993, he chronicles his work for TIMEBusinessWeekNewsweek, NYTimes, Forbes, and Fortune magazines in his book entitled Location Photography Secrets.  Upon its publication, he embraces the dawning digital age by teaching himself Photoshop 2.5. (Imagine Photoshop with no layers... I wonder if you can...) In 1996, he programs and uploads www.andysnow.com as the first iteration of his current web site. This ever-evolving site is now over 25 years young.

Thanks to his post-graduate studies at Ohio University and Antioch University, Andy expands further into sound, film, video, and all things digital. He completes a self-designed master’s degree program at Antioch in digital media in 2005.

With a long list of clients from GE to P&G, KPMG to DCDC, Andy Snow is a documentarian at heart, mindful of revealing essence presented through light, shadow, and color while remaining receptive to intermittent interventions that may signify chaos or possibly synchronicity…

His historic project, Watershed, Then&Now, commemorating the Great Flood of 1913 in the Miami Valley of western Ohio, is honored as one of twenty Best of 2013 by the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP). "Receiving this award from my peers is a terrific touchstone at this stage of my career," says Snow. To see and read more about the Great Flood commemoration, check out his blog .

You can also check out his video of one of the largest fountains in the world. This work is referenced in artnet news. Andy turns his attention to the new perspectives from the sky. In 2014, Andy works as DOP of Where the Rivers Meet, a music video produced in Dayton that heralded the immigrant-friendly policy of the City of Dayton.

In 2015, he begins documenting the construction and renovation of more than 20 libraries of the Dayton Metro Library system, a project that will wrap up next year. "The bonus piece of this incredible gig is working with local artists while recording the installation of fully funded juried works of art in each reimagined facility. What a blessing for and from this great community!"

In 2020, Andy is the recipient of a 2020 Governor's Award in the Individual Artist category bestowed by the Ohio Arts Council thanks to letters of recommendation from community leaders in performing and visual arts. “It’s a huge honor to be nominated; the award is a tribute to our incredible creative community here in the Dayton region.”
