More information about Rhythm in Shoes

Rhythm in Shoes is a collaboration of musicians and dancers based
in Dayton, Ohio. Through clogging, step dancing and tap, RIS expands the Anglo-American folk traditions with innovative
work that is at once boldly original and refreshingly recognizable. Inspired by those who came before, the Company
expresses a personal sense of community and a contagious rhythm.
RIS began in 1980 as the Shuffle Creek Dancers of Bloomington, Indiana. In 1987, the artistic directorship passed
from Frank Hall to Sharon Leahy. Ms. Leahy brought with her a contemporary understanding of dance and a talent
for extending the traditional vocabulary. The company changed its name to Rhythm in Shoes and by the end of 1988
relocated to Dayton, Ohio, home of both Ms. Leahy and Rick Good, the current artistic directors.
In the Miami Valley, RIS presents workshops and residency activities to individuals of all ages, backgrounds and
abilities. RIS also participates in extended residencies in collaboration with the Dayton Public Schools and The
Muse Machine, as well as the Ohio Arts Council's Arts in Education program. The Company's home concerts are produced
annually by Cityfolk of Dayton.
Nationally, RIS has presented residency activities and workshops and concert performances at such venues as Jacob's
Pillow, The Krannert Center, Flynn Theatre, Chatauqua Institute, William's College, Walton Art Center, and Penn
State University. The Company works closely with presenters to ensure a lasting impact on the community.
RIS is supported by the Ohio Arts Council, Culture Works of Dayton and the Montgomery
County Arts and Cultural District. Artistically, Ms. Leahy has been honored
with national, state, and local funding, receiving numerous fellowships from
National Endowment for the Arts and Ohio Arts Council. She and Mr. Good have
also been commissioned several times by Dayton Contemporary Dance Company to
create works for their repertory.
